Loss of Dispensing status for patients in the Pannal and Burn Bridge areas

Some patients will have recently received a letter from the practice notifying them that the practice will no longer be able to dispense their medications to them. From 1st March 2012 patients who have recieved this letter will need to take their prescriptions to a pharmacy of their choice to obtain their medication. We would like to apologise for this inconvenience but the practice must adhere to national legislation.

Repeat Prescriptions

medication_10If you have a repeat prescription (i.e. you take regular medication) you will be given a computer-generated request slip. Repeat medication can be ordered in one of the following ways:

  • Dispensing patients (patients whose medicines are dispensed by the practice) can call 01423 523591 between 1100hrs and 1300hrs daily.
  • Post your request slip (if you are a non-dispensing patient you can enclose a stamped addressed envelope and we will post the prescription back to you).
  • Electronically by registering at reception.
  • Deliver it by hand.If medication is required urgently, please ring the practice on 01423 566636 (or 0845 056 8060 when the surgery is closed).
Non-dispensing patients can arrange with a chemist for their prescription to be collected so that the drugs can be collected directly from the chemist shop (ask at reception for details).

The practice asks for two full working days’ notice for repeat prescriptions due to the large volume we are required to process. The practice issues an average of 350 prescriptions daily, of which 40% are for our dispensing patients. All these prescriptions require to be processed by doctors and staff; therefore it is not possible to do this in less than the two working days we ask for.

Waste medicines - it is estimated that 10% of all prescribed medicines are ultimately unused and therefore wasted each year within North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust area, at a cost of approximately £11 million. The trust believes that limiting the amount of drugs prescribed at any one time is likely to reduce the potential for wastage. Limiting the amount of drugs in a patient’s home may also reduce the risk for confusion or accidental ingestion by children.
